Please enjoy these songs from 2008, and then buy the artists’ albums. Stella Splice has made this post a page, accessible at the top of the blog, that you can check for updates throughout the year.

To download, click on the link, and on the resultant page scroll down just a bit until you can click on the orange Download Now button. Scroll down on that next page until you see “Your download should begin shortly. If it does not, try Download file now.” It never begins without me clicking on that link. Have fun!

Splice

Splice posts stem from the mixtape-making impulse (a.k.a. splicing songs together) that spawned this blog.

Download the mp3 of each of these two songs by clicking on the titles, and see if I can turn you on to something new.

This Splice is American without being dismissably folksy or hokey. It’s first foot-stomping, then sure-footed.

Dirty on Purpose and Band of Horses

Dirty on Purpose‘s Like Bees EP also came out this month. Stream it here at WOXY. The male vocals could carry the band, just as the female vocals could. Luckily, DoP has both. And I sort of like their habit of making EPs (and another is to come this year, according to a good review at Chromewaves). It’s just a handful of goodness, not too heavy like releasing a full album. It aligns with their vibe: an agreeable mix of upbeat and nonchalant. For instance, the great EP Sleep Late for a Better Tomorrow contains the song Mind Blindness, which you can download on thier website. Plus, EPs are a cheap way to get into a band.

DoP will be paired well when they perform a just-announced Valentine’s Day show in their hometown of Brooklyn with Seattle’s Band of Horses (tip from Brooklyn Vegan). Tickets went on sale just yesterday. Band of Horses have been touring their 2007 album Cease to Begin throughout the south, but after this holiday date they go to Europe, so the window to see them is small. Listen on their MySpace, watch them perform Is There a Ghost on Later with Jools Holland, or grab my favorite track on the disc, the folksy (for them) The General Specific (courtesy of The Toaster Talks).

The tone of the show will be dreamy, but rather than being too airy, it’ll have a good sort of heft. Hmm … hefty dreams. Not a bad theme for a V-Day show.
